Frame with cut denim fabric, 160 × 130 cm. Sylvie Fleury created this work by puncturing a denim canvas.
The work and its title are inspired by Lucio Fontana, the 20th-century artist who revolutionized the art world with his slashed and pierced canvases.
Here, the fabric recalls the ripped jeans of the 1980s, linking the piece to popular culture and referencing fashion and cinema.
The act of piercing the canvas also expresses a partly ironic critique of fields traditionally dominated by men, such as art and fashion.
Concetto Spaziale Jeans (Spatial Concept Jeans) was acquired by Centro Pecci during "Small Medium Large. Lifesize", an exhibition organized in 1992 to mark the conclusion of Italy’s first curatorial training program in contemporary art, held at Centro Pecci.
