The Centro per l’arte contemporanea Luigi Pecci, lead institution of the Rete del Contemporaneo in Toscana, welcomes with enthusiasm the decision by the Tuscany Region to designate Carrara as Tuscany’s Capital of Contemporary Art 2026.
The designation was officially announced today by the President of the Tuscany Region, Eugenio Giani, and the Regional Councillor for Culture, Cristina Manetti. The Rete del Contemporaneo in Toscana, which supported Carrara’s national candidacy, congratulates the city and the mudaC – Museo delle arti Carrara, and wishes them every success in this important role.
Carrara, already recognized as a UNESCO Creative City for Crafts and Folk Art since 2017, was the only Tuscan city among the five finalists for the title of Italian Capital of Contemporary Art 2026, thanks to the dossier Carrara: Contemporary for 2,000 Years.
For centuries, artists from around the world have been drawn to Carrara by its marble. Today this tradition continues through the Academy of Fine Arts, historic workshops and artisan laboratories, sustaining a constant dialogue between ancient knowledge and contemporary artistic practices.
The programme for Carrara Capital of Contemporary Art 2026 will unfold through a calendar of initiatives exploring the city’s artistic history, the transmission of knowledge across generations, and the relationship between art, landscape and urban transformation.
