"Mario Martone gives us a magnificent and enormous film. Thanks to his interpreters: Valeria Golino, obviously, now fully inside the universe of the writer, a wonderful, extraordinary Matilda De Angelis, the surprising Elodie, and all the supporting cast, but above all thanks to his restless, unclassifiable, free gaze, which becomes heartbreaking in the finale, when he tells the last meeting between Goliarda and Roberta." In 1980, the writer Goliarda Sapienza was arrested in Rome, and was incarcerated in the Rebibbia prison for stealing jewelry from a friend and lover. Inside the penitentiary institution, she met some inmates, bonding in particular with the Roman political activist and delinquent Roberta, and with Barbara. Once released, the three women continued to meet, becoming increasingly close and establishing a sisterly relationship. The relationship between Goliarda and Roberta became increasingly deeper and more intense, leading the writer to rediscover herself as a human being.
