Los Angeles. Saxophonist Fred Madison is haunted by a series of videotapes depicting his life from various perspectives. Married to Renée, he attends a party with her where he is approached by a mysterious man who taunts and terrorizes him. The next day, Fred receives a VHS tape showing Renée's mangled body. Arrested for murder, he suffers from excruciating migraines in prison, and one morning, another man, Pete, a young mechanic, wakes up in his cell and is immediately released. In the pay of the mob, Pete becomes the lover of the boss's girlfriend, Alice, who bears a striking resemblance to Fred's wife. The woman involves Pete in a heist against a porn director: but everything goes awry and the man enters a realm of madness and mystery...
