Roma illegale by Andrea Scarcella
Roma illegale by Andrea Scarcella

Rome in the 1990s was a hub of profound musical and social experimentation. At the start of the decade, a group of pioneering producers and DJs encountered the sounds of a new musical genre spreading from North America across Europe. It was the dawn of Techno, and the "sound of Rome," as they informally called themselves, ended up conquering the city; from the center to the outskirts, everyone danced to these new electronic rhythms in musical gatherings with unprecedented sound pressure. Suddenly, the Romans involved felt the distance between themselves and the rest of the world was narrowing, and from a peripheral fringe, Rome became a sought-after destination for the world's most acclaimed DJs and producers.

This screening is part of the series PERIFERIE. Questions from the Margins, curated by Martina Maccianti, a cycle of events exploring peripheries as places where languages, imaginaries, and practices emerge—capable of challenging dominant narratives of the present.
