Nora and Agnes are two deeply close sisters. The sudden return of their father Gustav—a charismatic and charming director but a chronically unreliable parent—reopens wounds that have never fully healed. Knowing Nora's acting talent, Gustav wants his daughter to play the lead in the film that is supposed to relaunch her career; she refuses, and the part goes to a young Hollywood star, Rachel Kemp. Her arrival throws the delicate family dynamics into disarray: the two sisters will have to confront their father and their past.
"Trier is obviously fully aware of the many linguistic layers of his work, but also for this reason, beyond the structure of his film, one perceives its sentimental value, the desire of two daughters to finally be heard, loved, and, conversely, the subtle perversion of a man who confuses being a son and being a father, in a tangle of relationships that reminds us that only cinema, ultimately, can bring all this to the surface, transforming life into fiction".
