Amelia, a single mother tormented by the violent loss of her husband, struggles with her son Samuel's fear, convinced that a terrible monster lurks in their home, ready to kill them. When a mysterious book, titled "Babadook," enters their home, Samuel becomes convinced that the Babadook is indeed the terrifying creature haunting his nightmares.
Ten years have passed since the Italian release of The Babadook, and it's safe to say that the film retains its visceral, obsessive, and disturbing power.
"An internal and psychological drama held together by a tenuous thread of rationality, The Babadook is scary for a very simple reason: it doesn't frighten immediately but rather insinuates itself like a threatening infection into the darkest, most unknown side of our soul. A terrifying, bleak cinematic essay on ghosts, on the disease of paranoia, on its constant presence, so dark that it forces a reaction from the viewer. A moral tale, ultimately: facing the darkness is the only possible way to still believe in a glimmer of light." (Emiliano Dal Toso)
