    The Documentary: Apnea

A powerful and emotional work, Apnea gives voice to 14 migrants who fled their home countries, crossed the desert, endured imprisonment in Libya, and attempted the dangerous crossing of the Mediterranean Sea. Among them are Danielle, Fofana, Moustapha, Joy, Bakary, Malick, Amadou, and others. Their stories come together in a collective narrative of survival and hardship. Through a sober and direct visual style, the film by Claudia Cataldi, Elena and Stefano Poggioni places the focus entirely on the faces and voices of the protagonists, supported by an original soundtrack composed entirely from the human voice by Giovanni Magaglio, and poetic black-and-white animations by Pietro Elisei.

The documentary is divided into four chapters – High Tide, Drift, Storm, Abyss – and features a minimalist setup with a fixed camera and black background. The effect is both intimate and powerful: a space for listening, understanding, and remembrance.

This initiative stems from the collaboration between Centro Pecci and local organizations engaged in migration issues, human rights, and civic memory. An evening to reflect together, through film, on the lives that too often remain unseen.
