Sailor Ripley, a brash ex-con on parole, meets Lula Pace, a troubled young woman plagued by traumatic nightmares after being raped as a teenager. Escaping her domineering and decadent mother, Lula finds solace and passion with Sailor. The two head for Texas, hoping to flee justice, but the mother—rejected by Sailor—sends her ex-lover hitmen after them. Dressed in a fake snakeskin jacket, Sailor drags the insatiable Lula from motel to motel, indulging in intense sexual escapades while eluding their psychopathic pursuers. Eventually, Sailor attempts a robbery, lands in prison, and reunites with Lula and their child five years later. Despite initial hesitation, he embraces his family and sings “Love Me Tender” in a parody of tenderness following their obsessive erotic journey.
