The Chauvet Pont d'Arc cave in southern France contains what are currently believed to be the oldest cave paintings in the world, dating back more than 30,000 years. The cave, located in the Ardèche valley, was only discovered in 1994, but it is not open to the public. Human breath, in fact, would alter the humidity of the cave which would be extremely detrimental to the representations. For a long time access to the cave was only granted to a single director who was permitted to capture the paintings on film for the benefit of the public. The great German director Werner Herzog was chosen and he does not disappoint, capturing and giving life to the paintings.
