This October, CineBrividi returns to Centro Pecci Cinema with horror classics, new discoveries and filmmaker Q&As. The programme includes Damian McCarthy’s Hokum, a journey through the rooms of a remote Irish hotel, where a disappearance becomes entangled with unsettling tales of witchcraft.
Deeply depressed, Ohm Bauman—a cynical, moderately successful writer—decides to visit the place his parents had gone to shortly before their deaths: a remote Irish village steeped in tales of black magic and witchcraft. The owner of the Bilberry Woods Hotel, where Ohm is staying, claims to have trapped a Cailleach (a powerful witch) in the honeymoon suite. After the disappearance of Fiona, a young woman he met at the hotel, Ohm decides to investigate the events thoroughly.
"As in *Caveat* and *Oddity*, the film’s core relies on a claustrophobic construction of space and time, where the action is confined to limited cubic spaces—small, dark rooms—and the passage of time is slowly drawn out into an increasingly detached and cramped visual dimension. (...) We are thrust into a nearly timeless reality where digital communication is useless and the most dangerous weapon is an antiquated hunting crossbow." (Emiliano Oggero)
