Jean-Louis Garnell is a French photographer. Passionate about photography as a teenager, he began a teaching career after studying computer science. In 1983, he took his first shots of the urban landscapes of Toulouse and its suburbs. He participated in the DATAR Photographic Mission in 1985 and 1986, one of his first experiences as an artist. This commission launched his career and encouraged him to concentrate on photography full-time. He continued thinking about the disorder and the indeterminate, themes that remain present in his work today. He participated in various commissions throughout Europe including the Transmanche Photographic mission (1989), Saarebrück (1993), Porto Marghera (1998), Mutations (2000), and Morimondo (2006). His work has been shown in group exhibitions, notably including Une Autre Objectivité in 1989, and in solo shows such as Les paysages perdus (1987), Désordres et paysages (1988), Du musée au musée (1993), Jean-Louis Garnell Werke (1985-95), Figures imposées (1997), Par le noir (2004), Pièces avec personnages (2005), Escalier B (2007). Jean-Louis Garnell has also published monographic books (1989, 1995, 2001, 2004). Nowadays he teaches at the Marseille-Méditerranée School of Art and Design.
