My Neighbor Totoro comes to the big screen at Centro Pecci Cinema on Sunday 22 November at 10:30 am, as part of the Animiamoci film series. Screened in Italian.
Satsuke and her sister Mei move to a country house with their father to be near their hospitalized mother. The two girls discover that the forest near their new home is inhabited by magical creatures, including the good forest spirit Totoro, a gray, fluffy creature with a somewhat picturesque appearance. Thanks to their friendship with these strange characters, the two girls embark on fantastic adventures...
"A modern fairy tale, a film avowedly for children, but one from which, as with all Miyazaki's films, adults can and should learn. Miyazaki's entire poetics are encapsulated here: there's love for the environment, for children, and a longing for a past in which society was more polite and kind toward others. What is surprising, but not overly so, about the film is its innate freshness. An indispensable work, graced, for once, by a commendable Italian adaptation." (Andrea Chirichelli)
