The end of the world
Lectio Magistralis
Following visits from anthropologist Marc Augé and sociologist Zygmunt Bauman, the Pecci Centre has invited astrophysicist Giovanni Bignami to discuss the theme of the end of the world. Professor Bignami, who has also held the position of President of the Agenzia Spaziale Italiana, will address the discoveries which are changing our view of the world, of space and of our own lives. If Mars landing projects are today no longer science fiction, what do we know of the stars closest to us? Could humans actually move to these "habitable planets" when Earth no longer exists? But above all, how might "the end of the world" be according to an astrophysicist?
A series of conferences and debates which expand upon the various themes explored in the inaugural exhibition, The End of the World, from scientific, philosophical and literary perspectives: from very recent theories of physics to prehistory, from science fiction to ecology and sustainability.
